Permaculture Townsville welcomes you to join us for this upcoming workshop which will establish the community garden site for the coming wet season! Come along to help prepare the soil, sharing in the planting efforts of these wet season companion crops and caring for our guild – leading into the ‘harvest party’!

DATE: ?? ?Sunday December 11th 2011

TIME:?? ??? ?3:00pm – 6:00pm

VENUE:?? ?Permaculture Townsville’s plot at the Townsville Community Garden (Robertson St, Railway Estate)

Workshop outline :

– SOS – Save Our Soil :? Not that our site’s soil needs saving but in order to ensure we have an abundant healthy crop, we must do a heavy mulch to keep out the weeds, hold moisture, reduce erosion and foster the important microbiology!

– Companion Planting :? Corn and beans are best mates. We will plant a variety sweet tasting corn and a range of beans along side to help each other through the heavy rains! Sweet potato will be built up on some mounds to run wild and cassava will be introduced as a wind barrier and space filler to watch over this fast growing selection of summer treats.

– Sharing the Caring : We will cover some basics nurturing and maintenance techniques for our growing yield, however these edible goodies will do most of the work themselves if we get the first few steps right!

– Harvest Party :? While we are celebrating over the Christmas break and welcoming in the new year, the sunlight and rain will be giving their optimum energy to the dear microbes to photosynthesized over our summer heat and heavy rains to provide the nutrients and minerals for optimum growth of our community guild. Then, there is only one thing left to do…enjoy the harvest party! Everyone participating in the workshop will be invited back to enjoy the festivities with another sharing and caring episode of harvesting techniques and community cook up of some of the abundance we share!

What to bring : Slip, slop, slap – sunscreen, water and a hat! For lunch – a plate to share if you can spare. BYO shovel, gloves and wheelbarrow if you have them, otherwise some will be available on site to use.

Cost : Free for Permaculture Townsville Members! $8 donation for non-members to cover some expenses of the required materials. If you want to bring friends who are non-members as yet, they are more than welcome to join up on the day to participate in the workshop for free.
